what's the big deal about blogs?

The skeptical among us note that the average readership for blogs is one person — the author himself.

The less skeptical will note an amazing expansion of blog writing, as if it were an end in itself and a reward, plus the growing readerships of some of the best blogs.

So why do we write? Simply to call attention to ourselves, like the fellow in the Stephen Crane poem?

A man said to the universe:
"Sir I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation."

The less skeptical among us, once more, will resist this sense of indifference the universe projects. And counter with a kind of faith in the need for communication among us.

The need for talking about the big issues of the day, whether they concern work or play.

And the big issues that won't go away, the timeless issues that persist pass all political and cultural divides.

That's why we write, at any rate. and why we invite you to read — and comment as you will.
